The senator has warned that without this key intervention, San Diego could see between 800 and 1,000 migrants per day turned onto the streets, according to a statement on social media.
In pursuing further financial support, Butler underscored the urgency of the matter after discussions with San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Nora Vargas. Both local leaders have presented how critical the need is for more SSP funding to support the San Diego community's efforts in providing aid to migrants. In a statement, Butler expressed solidarity with both Gloria and Vargas, vowing to stay "dedicated to advocating for policies that uphold our values of justice and compassion." She further probed that delays in allocating funds could escalate the predicaments faced by both the migrating individuals and the localities that serve as their reluctant hosts, as per her official website.
Even as California is a sanctuary state with options for state funding, the Senator is pointing toward the federal government, requesting that FEMA's SSP grants be given out prolifically to non-governmental organizations. Butler's outreach also included an appeal to new applicants, making the pool of eligible groups for receiving funds more diverse and, presumably, more capable of managing the migrant influx with varied skillsets and experience.
