Chicago residents are bracing for a wild swing in weather, as a hazardous storm front is set to replace today's record warmth with severe thunderstorms followed by winter conditions, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures are expected to hit near 76 degrees today, but a powerful cold front this evening will introduce hail, high winds, and a chance of snow into the mix.
Scattered thunderstorms may turn severe from 6 PM to midnight, "some could become severe," the NWS cautions, with hail upto 2 inches in diameter and a tornado or two possible tonight, within the same breath they warned of a 20-30°F drop in temperature coming in just about an hour's span after the front passes; and wind gusts could potentially exceed 50 mph immediately following the front alongside a transition to freezing temperatures and snow showers that could lead to hazardous travel conditions, not to mention a significant plunge in temperature will leave Thursday's "high near 27" feeling particularly biting after today's warmth.
In light of the forecasts, Chicagoans are faced with the imminent reality of how fleeting the reprieve of some of the most unseasonable February warmth on record can be. To quote the National Weather Service Chicago, "we are in for an absolutely wild meteorological ride," as detailed in a post, forecasting summer-like conditions to give way to spring storms and a sharp winter chill in mere hours.
A period of snow is possible late tonight and could produce some accumulations. There is still a lot of uncertainty regarding how much, if any snow will occur tonight. The abrupt shift also bears consequences for travelers, especially by water, as gale force winds and very hazardous waves are expected along the Illinois and Indiana nearshore waters of Lake Michigan; the National Weather Service has extended the hazardous weather outlook to these areas as well, preparing mariners for a turbid interchange of nature's elements as the city tightens its coat against the fickle embrace of a season undecided, well breathing out the warm air of today, preparing for the cold inhale of tomorrow's gusts and chills.
