Four months after Preston Lord, a 16-year-old boy, was fatally assaulted at a Halloween party in Queen Creek, his death continues to stir unrest amongst the Valley communities. Lord succumbed to his injuries two days after the incident, having suffered a severe brain injury, according to 12News. Despite recommendations from Queen Creek Police Department to review charges against seven individuals, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office has yet to make an arrest. Parents and local authorities are now mounting pressure for systemic change within school districts.
A community walk was held Wednesday, leading dozens of Lord's supporters and family members to the Chandler Unified School District building before a board meeting. "Preston has connected each and every single one of us here today with his bright smile, his laugh, his care for others," said an attendee at the event, as reported by 12News. In response to demands for change, Superintendent Frank Narducci outlined several steps the district is undertaking, including an anonymous tip line and the proposed creation of a teen violence advisory committee.
During the board meeting, parents took turns bringing to light other violent incidents involving students, voicing a collective frustration over the insufficient action by school leaders. Despite these testimonials, controversy erupted as board president Barb Mozdzen commented on the status of a teen who had spoken, leading to an outraged exit by attendees and subsequent social media calls for Mozdzen's resignation.
Jeanna Pignatiello, a Queen Creek resident, told 12News about the chaos of the night Lord was assaulted, with teenagers spilling out of cars and exhibiting signs of intoxication, questioning the absence of police intervention. Pignatiello's description of the events points to a sense of neglect and a tragic failure to preemptively halt a gathering spiraling out of control.
The Queen Creek Police Department has called for residents to provide any surveillance footage from the night of the party to assist in the ongoing investigation. The district's plan to address teen violence is anticipated to be detailed in the upcoming weeks.
