Nearly a decade after a fatal shooting rocked a San Diego neighborhood, an arrest has finally been made. The San Diego Police Department has cracked a cold case wide open, capturing the alleged perpetrator responsible for the 2014 killing of 42-year-old Daniel Coriz. On Sunday, May 11, 2014, Coriz was found shot outside of a home on Koe Street, succumbing to a gunshot wound to his upper torso before paramedics could save him.
Reports indicate that two masked men approached Coriz, with one firing the shots that ended his life. The suspects were said to have been dressed in black hooded sweatshirts, black pants, and black bandannas covering their faces. The San Diego police have continued to investigate to finally bring closure to this case actively. After years of relentless work, detectives managed to identifiably connect the dots, zeroing in on 50-year-old Sonny Estrada as the shooter, according to a statement issued by the San Diego Police Department.
Estrada, already imprisoned at San Diego County Jail on unrelated charges, was booked on one count of murder on February 9 at roughly 12:30 p.m. The decade-long quest for justice for the victim’s family may be approaching its denouement. Still, the police are calling on the community for further help. Despite the time-lapse, new information could help to bolster the case against Estrada.
The police underscore the significance of community assistance in solving such harrowing crimes. "Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call," say authorities, seeking witnesses or anyone holding details that could shed further light on the tragic night Coriz met his untimely death. Information can be discreetly shared with the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
