A 25-year-old Detroit woman, Reanna Valentine, pleaded guilty to charges of assault and battery after a shocking incident involving a 10-year-old girl at Somerset Mall in Troy. FOX 2 Detroit reported that the unprovoked attack took place last month when Valentine allegedly grabbed the child's head and slammed it into a glass display case in the mall's food court.
The victim, Sophia Simpson, recounted the ordeal saying, "That woman came up and hit my head against the glass," as obtained by FOX 2 Detroit. "I started crying, and then she turns around, she starts laughing at me, and then she quickly puts on her mask and runs away." Valentine was apprehended after boldly returning to the mall the next day, where she was recognized and arrested.
Valentine's plea was entered Tuesday before 52-4 District Judge Maureen McGinnis, according to The Oakland Press. The assault, which was captured by the shopping center's surveillance cameras, shows Valentine "forcefully" committing the violent act. The young girl was with her father and friends at the time and had reportedly walked in front of Valentine just before the assault.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Valentine was released on her recognizance with a tether reported by CBS Detroit, as mentioned by Hoodline. Troy police described the event as appearing to be completely "unprovoked and for no apparent reason." The child's father's witness statement matched the shocking video evidence, which showed Valentine gripping the innocent girl's head to forcefully smash it against the display glass.
The sentencing for this disturbing case is scheduled for March 26. Further details will be reported following the conclusion of the judicial process.
