In a somber twist of fate, a Florida man's life that descended into the all-too-common tragedy spurred by the opioid epidemic has led to the guilty plea of an Indian River County resident. According to a Justice Department release, Keyon Lewis, 27, admitted in federal court on Feb. 20 to dealing a lethal dose of fentanyl, marking another grim statistic in the nation's battle against drug overdoses.
Tracing back to a November 2021 deal gone fatally wrong, Lewis acknowledged that he sold the narcotic to a man in Vero Beach, who was discovered dead the following day by his wife. The local sheriff's office, using the deceased's phone, arranged to buy more of the drug. They nabbed Lewis on Nov. 7, 2021, waiting with deadly cargo at the scene of the casualty.
Lewis is now faced with a bleak future as he could see bars for 20 years to life. U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon is set to decide his fate at a sentencing scheduled for May 21. U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe and DEA Special Agent in Charge Deanne L. Reuter, alongside Sheriff Eric Flowers, were the bearers of this announcement.
Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is a key player in the overdose crisis hammering the United States, leading to over 150 daily deaths. According to information obtained from the CDC, the drug is involved in more overdoses than any other. In Florida, the cases have surged, showcasing the drug's unyielding grip on those it touches.
For those seeking more details on the dangers of fentanyl and its ghastly capacity for destruction, the DEA and CDC websites provide critical information. Meanwhile, court documents linked to Lewis's case are accessible for the public via the Southern District of Florida's District Court website.
