A man incarcerated at San Diego Central Jail has died after experiencing a medical emergency, sparking an investigation into the circumstances of his death. The inmate, 54-year-old Liutoa Vitale Vili, was pronounced dead after a medical situation unfolded within the facility on February 4.
Authorities from the San Diego Sheriff's Department discovered Vili during a routine medication distribution around 10:00 a.m., as per the statement released on Hoodline, in need of medical assessment. Despite swift rescue attempts by deputies and nursing staff, and the prompt arrival of paramedics, the inmate became unresponsive en route to the hospital and could not be saved.
The deceased, reported by the San Diego Sheriff's Department, had been in custody since June 26, 2023, after being apprehended on felony warrants related to Felony Vandalism charges dating back to October 2021. Vili, believed to be unsheltered at the time of his arrest, now leaves behind unanswered questions as his family comes to terms with the loss.
The Sheriff's Homicide Unit, adhering to in-custody death protocols, is conducting a comprehensive investigation while, the Medical Examiner's Office determines cause and manner of death. Meanwhile, a Sheriff's Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to provide support to Vili's family, as noted in the press release by the Sheriff's Department.
This incident has also been reported to the Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) to ensure oversight and transparency throughout the investigatory process.
