In a case that has rocked the Logan Square community, Cook County prosecutors have secured the aid of a key witness in the chilling murder investigation of Brittany Battaglia, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Peter Mathes, once a suspect in the concealment of Battaglia's killing, has become pivotal to the state's case after agreeing to provide testimony against Genesis Silva, Battaglia's boyfriend and the accused murderer.
Battaglia was last seen in early June 2023 before her nearly decapitated body was found in a duffel bag. In a turn of events, Silva's initial charges of concealing a homicidal death have been upgraded to first-degree murder. This escalation, reported by the WLS, comes after prosecutors reportedly obtained recorded jailhouse phone calls of Silva making alleged admissions about the murder, including Mathes' role in the cleanup.
Authorities argue that Genesis Silva, 34, ended his girlfriend's life before hiding her body in his residence. Aside from the gruesome finding, trace amounts of suspected blood and a machete were discovered in Silva's apartment, aligning with the physical evidence of the violent act. Quamieshia Greathouse, Battaglia's roommate, recalled that Battaglia had planned to visit Silva's home to cook him dinner the evening of her disappearance, as per the WLS report.
While battling with the horrific details of the case, prosecutors have indicated that Mathes has cooperated fully with the investigation, his willingness to testify netted him release from electronic monitoring, as agreed upon in court. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, charges against Mathes are set to be dismissed in light of his cooperation. His attorney, however, has remained silent and the state's attorney's office has not commented, citing ongoing litigation.
Silva's past legal troubles, which include a 2009 sexual abuse conviction prohibiting him from wielding a machete, add a layer of complexity to his criminal profile amidst this current trial. Silva has pleaded not guilty to all prior and current charges against him. As the justice system grapples with the weight of the tragedy that took Battaglia's life, and as the community awaits answers, the pivot of a once-accused suspect to a critical witness marks a significant twist in the pursuit of truth and justice for Brittany Battaglia.
