Measles has made a surprise return to Broward County, as school officials at Manatee Bay Elementary School in Weston confirmed a case of the infectious virus. Broward County Public Schools officials broke the news on Friday, noting the resurgence of a disease that's become exceptionally rare in the United States thanks to widespread vaccination efforts, according to a report by WSVN.
The case, identified within the K-5 institution located at 19200 Manatee Isles Drive, has sparked concern among parents and educators alike, though officials have yet to disclose if the infected individual is a pupil or staff member; however, the WSVN reported that a third grade student at the school, with no significant travel history appears to be the patient diagnosed with the condition, which is known for symptoms like cough runny nose sore throat fever and an unmistakable red blotchy rash.
Measles is notorious for its high contagion, primarily spreading through airborne particles from coughs or sneezes. Despite this unsettling development, BCPS officials have taken immediate steps to manage the situation.
