Mesa police officers found themselves in a tense standoff early Friday morning, with shots ringing out in a quiet neighborhood. The drama unfolded near Stapley Drive and Main Street when officers responded to a call about an abandoned stolen work vehicle. A 25-year-old man was seen approaching the vehicle, which prompted two officers to discharge their weapons. As reported by ABC15, the specifics of what led the officers to suddenly open fire have yet to be disclosed. Thankfully, there were no casualties during the incident.
Following the initial gunfire, the suspect attempted to retreat and reportedly failed to comply with officers' commands. Officers resorted to using non-lethal force, eventually subduing the man with bean bag rounds and a Taser. A knife was discovered in the vicinity of the arrest, adding to the tension of the encounter. However, its relevance to the events remains unclear. The Mesa Police assert that the individual is now facing felony charges, according to the same ABC15 report.
The area was quickly cordoned off as the investigation commenced. Main Street and Stapley Drive were transformed into a scene from an action movie, with police caution tape and patrolling officers. Residents were advised by the Mesa police to avoid the area around Barkley and Mahoney Avenue, as indicated by 12News.
Helicopter footage caught the aftermath, showing several individuals emerging from a nearby home with hands atop their heads as officers stood guard with weapons at the ready. It remains to be seen whether these individuals have any connection to the stolen vehicle or if they were just caught up in the fray. Investigators are actively executing a search warrant related to their investigation, with further details pending release, as per the information obtained from 12News.
