A bloody altercation in a North Austin shopping center parking lot turned deadly this past Saturday, with one person losing their life to gunfire. The Austin Police Department was on the scene shortly after the shots were fired just after 2 p.m. in the 7800 block of N. Lamar Blvd., a busy nexus of commerce nestled between Guadalupe Street and Research Boulevard, as confirmed in a statement obtained by KVUE.
Emergency responders, including units from APD, Texas DPS, and Austin-Travis County EMS, rushed to the scene, desperately performing life-saving measures. According to KVUE, despite their best efforts, the victim was pronounced dead by 2:30 p.m. amid the swirling chaos of first responders and onlookers. APD later clarified that the public faces no ongoing threat.
Further details on the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain scarce as the investigation unfolds. However, Sergeant Lee Knouse of APD provided a briefing later Saturday, stating, "The disturbance occurred between two individuals and DPS, the Austin Police Department, EMS, and fire were dispatched to the scene to assist," as CBS Austin reported. The victim, whose identity has yet to be released, succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased at 2:34 p.m.
While APD digs into the roots of the tragedy, they are calling on the community for assistance. Anyone in possession of information about the shooting is urged to come forward. Knouse encouraged witnesses with any pertinent information, according to CBS Austin, to call the Austin Police Department's homicide tip line at 512-472-TIPS.
