A recent car crash in Portland's Buckman neighborhood has taken an ominous turn as the police investigation reveals a potential shootout that led to a tragic outcome. Shane M. McKeever, 22, the driver of the sedan involved, is now faced with manslaughter in the first degree and reckless driving charges, after the deadly incident, law enforcement sources said.
Following the crash, McKeever was detained and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. While details are still emerging, investigators are piecing together a narrative that includes gunfire aimed at McKeever, although the alleged shooter has not been identified or found. In a press release by the Portland Police Bureau, they indicated that "numerous witnesses and people with information about what happened fled the scene without talking to police."
The authorities are now making a public appeal for witnesses to come forward to "ensure they have a full picture of what took place and who was involved." The police urge those with any knowledge of the events to contact their Traffic Investigations Unit and reference case number 24-46438. The plea was made in urgency due to the recognition that the clarity and completeness of witness accounts are critical in such complex cases.
The victim's identity remains undisclosed, pending notification of next of kin. This current fatality marks the 14th traffic-related death in the City of Portland this year, which is an elevated figure even when considering the exclusions made by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) tally, such as private property incidents and delayed deaths post-crash, according to the official police statement.
