A gruesome discovery in a sleepy Arizona neighborhood—93-year-old Carl Miller found dead in Cordes Lakes, and his 59-year-old roommate, Bridget Nelson, is behind bars, facing a first-degree murder rap.
Deputies from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office checked in on Miller after a friend waved a red flag about not hearing from the elderly man for a stretch. Nelson threw off deputies on Feb. 16 with a yarn about Miller hittin' the road out of town, no one the wiser to his whereabouts, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. That story didn't hold water—the truck was still parked, gathering dust with engine trouble.
When the authorities rolled back to Miller's place, responses were zilch from Nelson. A peek through the window laid the grim scene bare—a lifeless body sprawled on the floor, as per the Sheriff's Office. The scene was a whisper of violence, Miller having met a harsh end, with preliminary signs screaming foul play.
Neighbor Joyce Albers was hit hard by the news, telling Arizona's Family, "I was in shock. Totally shocked. I was hoping and praying it wasn't him." The tight-knit community members remembered Miller as a good-hearted fellow, his untimely demise sitting with them all wrong. Albers added, "He was friendly, and he was a good-hearted person, and it just wasn't right."
Details on the motive and manner of Miller's death remain locked up for the moment, but evidence suggests he had been dead for at least one day prior to the welfare check. Nelson, now detained at the Yavapai County jail, ensnared by the law, awaits her day in court.
