A tragic end to a young life occurred last summer as San Antonio authorities have now made an arrest in the case of a 9-month-old girl's death. Mark Anthony Chavez, 29, is facing charges after police determined that he was responsible for the fatal injuries to Isabella Chavez, who suffered what doctors have stated was a "high impact injury," indicative of abuse. According to a report by KSAT, Chavez has been charged with injury to a child-reckless-omission, a second-degree felony.
The events unfolded on June 21 when Chavez was supposedly taking care of the infant. He claimed that the baby suffered an accidental fall, hitting her head on a windowsill after tumbling backward on a sofa. Even after witnessing the baby vomit, Chavez and a witness only proceeded to give her a bottle. The next day, he watched as she supposedly fell again and hit her head against a metal lock on a toy, as per his statement to the police. Something was clearly to not go right since the evening concluded with the infant's breath stopping, and her body "tightening up."
Despite these two consecutive days of head injuries, it wasn't until the baby stopped breathing that Chavez called 911 around 7 p.m. Paramedics rushed Isabella to the hospital, only to find her unresponsive upon arrival. She was later pronounced dead. The doctor who examined Isabella concluded that the nature of her injury was consistent with abuse rather than an accident, as Chavez had suggested.
This led authorities to assert that Chavez recklessly caused serious bodily injury that resulted in Isabella's death. After a detailed investigation, a warrant for his arrest was issued yesterday, which led to his booking into jail today. The bond for Chavez has been set at $150,000. His narrative of accidental falls failed to reconcile with the grisly medical evidence, painting a grim picture of the baby's final days. This case continues to unfold as legal proceedings are set to get under way to fully determine the circumstances that led to the death of young Isabella.
