On Presidents' Day, San Antonio's most heavyweight resident threw his hat into the ring for the presidential race. Weighing in at a colossal 4,000 pounds, Timothy the Hippo has announced his bid to become the Hippo of the United States—HOTUS for short. However, this jovial campaign face, belonging to a semi-aquatic mammal, can't quite meet the constitutional age and species requirements for the actual presidency.
At a morning press conference in the Africa Live exhibit of the San Antonio Zoo, the zoo released its line of exclusive Timothy-themed presidential merchandise. Supporters can start flashing their preference for the hippo candidate with T-shirts, magnets, keychains, tumblers, and yard signs up for grabs, as reported by KENS5.
Bexar County residents received an additional treat as they can enjoy $8 admission to the zoo on Locals Day. The Zoo Crew also distributed limited-edition "Timothy for President" bumper stickers to attendees, aligning the light-hearted campaign with actual conservation efforts. "This groundbreaking event will mark Timothy's run for the presidency and the launch of his exclusive presidential merchandise line," the San Antonio Zoo touted.
Even though Timothy's chances are slim to none for stepping into the Oval Office, his endearing motto, "Naps for All,” and his reputation as a charismatic, single hippo may win over hearts, if not votes. Notably, the zoo's decision to reintroduce its popular hippo mugs solidifies Timothy's status as a legitimate contender—or, at least, a popular zoo attraction—according to a statement by the Express-News.
While Timothy may harbor a "hippo-sized crush" on Fiona, the female hippo from the Cincinnati Zoo, his presidential aspirations are indeed unique. Advertised as the potential "largest president to date," Timothy's campaign, rolled out at the ripe age of 8 (years young in hippo terms), brings a whimsical touch to local politics, the Express-News describes.
For those interested in following the hippo's presidential journey, updates will be available on the San Antonio Zoo's website and social media channels. While the spectacle might not change the course of the nation, it's certainly setting the stage for an entertaining election season, San Antonio style.
