A grisly discovery at the Tijuana River Valley Sports Complex has San Diego authorities investigating a suspicious death. Firefighters and Southern Division officers were called to the scene on Monday, where they found a vehicle ablaze in the complex parking lot located at the 2600 block of Sunset Avenue. The call came in around 11 am, and responders were greeted by an eerie scene: an older model cargo-style van, now charred beyond recognition of its original color, and the body of a man partially inside, according to the official report.
The Fire Department extinguished the flames before discovering the body, which had the torso inside and the legs outside the vehicle—an unnerving tableau for those first on the scene. The San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team has stepped in to determine how the fire started, while the Homicide Unit is also conducting an investigation, erring on the side of caution to uncover any foul play at hand. Identifying the victim and piecing together the moments that led up to this tragic event has become a task for the Medical Examiner’s Office, complicated by the condition of the deceased and the remains of the van.
While investigators continue their work, the details that led to this incident remain mysterious. An autopsy will be required to establish the exact cause of death and whether the victim—believed to be male—suffered any traumatic injury prior to the fire. As of now, further information about his age and race remains under wraps pending identification efforts.
Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any knowledge that might shed light on this matter. Individuals with information are encouraged to contact the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
