The police are cautioning individuals, particularly the elderly, to be wary of those claiming to provide blessings, healing ceremonies, or curse lifting for a fee. In these dubious rituals, victims often lose cash and valuables under the guise of 'purification'.
The SFPD released a video, advising residents on how to spot these frauds and protect themselves from becoming victims. According to San Francisco Police's announcement, the community is encouraged to be suspicious of strangers offering such services and to report any encounters with potential scammers. In detailed descriptions, the perpetrators involved in recent events comprise one Asian male between the ages of 50 to 60 years, and two Asian females ranging from early 30s to 60 years old, often masked.
In response to these scams, the SFPD has extended a lifeline to the non-English speaking members of the Chinese community. A special tip line has been established, offering Cantonese speakers the opportunity to leave information without language barriers. Additionally, the department has emphasized that it features hundreds of officers versed in over 30 diverse languages, aiming to provide Limited English Proficiency (LEP) services and support by encouraging certified bilingual officers to engage with the community.
Victims or individuals aware of scam attempts should immediately contact the police. Reports can be made at any SFPD Station or by calling Dispatch at (415) 553-0123. Anonymous tips are also welcomed, either through the special tip lines for Cantonese speakers, by calling (415) 553-9212 or 1-855-737-3847 or through the general Anonymous Tip Line at (415) 575-4444, or by sending a text beginning with SFPD to TIP411.
