The hotel's rich tapestry includes visits from U.S. Presidents like Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Bill Clinton. In 1898, the hotel saw the muster of Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders, carving a unique military twist into its story. As Historic Hotels reports, more than just presidents, the hotel has also caught the attention of icons such as baseball legend Babe Ruth and Hollywood star Mae West, among others.
Under the management of William Menger's widow, Mary, after his death in 1871, the hotel witnessed significant upgrades, like modern bathrooms and gas lighting.
