West Palm Beach native Darrell K. Williams has returned to his Florida roots, now serving as the president of Hampton University, where his leadership is bringing new prestige to the historically Black institution. Williams, who once left the sunny streets of West Palm Beach for the halls of higher education, has not only climbed the educational ladder but has also commanded respect as a retired U.S. Army three-star general. WPTV reported on Williams's homecoming and his commitment to raising the university's academic standing.

Having grown up in the Pleasant City community, Williams understands the value of a supportive background. Wading through the strains of desegregation in schools, he became adaptable, an essential trait that carried him into his military and academic careers. Reflecting his competitive spirit from his days on the basketball courts of Gaines Park, "All of the friendships that we developed," Williams told WPTV, "The competition that was second to none."

In a recent visit to his old stomping grounds, accompanied by his wife Myra, also a Hampton alum, Williams demonstrated his dedication by awarding a full-ride scholarship to a Palm Beach County student. According to BNN Breaking, Danae Scott of Dreyfoos School of the Arts was the lucky recipient, a gift that has made her educational aspirations feasible. "I was surprised to hear my name because I didn't actually expect to get the scholarship," Scott herself said.

Under Williams' helm, having taken over almost two years ago, Hampton University's influence has only grown. With initiatives aimed at pushing frontiers in fields like cybersecurity and clean energy, the university's curve of progress is on the ascent. Stepping into the role of president, West Palm Beach native to triumph, Williams matches administrative prowess with a personal touch, ensuring promising youths receive the 'standard of excellence in education for life' as he did. "And I can't think of a better place to go that for one. Opens the door of opportunity and one that teaches you the values and the relationships that will be with you for the rest of your life," Williams said.
