A young man, Terneal Smith, has been charged with first-degree murder following the tragic shooting of Jeanariun J. St. Fort in a West Palm Beach apartment complex late last month. Smith, 21, alongside another suspect, was implicated in the violent altercation that left St. Fort dead on February 21, according to WPBF.
Caught on camera, Smith and an associate were involved in a physical altercation with the victim moments before the fatal incident. Not showing up for his initial court appearance, Smith was ordered to be held without bond and is scheduled to return to court on April 1. Matching the grim occasion for Smith, a callous act of violence claimed the life of the 19-year-old St. Fort, as per WPBF reports.
Lending their voices to the community's response, residents of Lake Mangonia Apartments, where the crime occurred, expressed relief and a sense of security in the wake of the arrest. Titania Lewis, a mother of three, told CBS12, "I think it's great because we need somewhere safe to live. I have kids and a lot of people out here have kids and there's a lot of old people. So I think it's great." Meanwhile, Tracy Parham, a frequent visitor to the complex, praised the West Palm Beach Police Department for their effectiveness, saying, "I'm surprised that the West Palm Beach Police Department is really, really gettin' up to speed and catching people now that are committing all these ridiculous crimes 'cause it's senseless."
A key piece of evidence leading to Smith's capture was lost sandals and a cellphone, which was found at the scene of the crime. Following a positive identification by a witness from a photographic lineup, a forensic examination of the blue cellphone and its six-digit PIN sealed Smith's fate. The examination revealed a photo of Smith in the same unique black-and-white sandals and black sweatshirt identified from the crime scene. Despite losing the phone during the struggle with St. Fort, Smith appeared in court, the very same PIN was used to unlock another phone in his possession when he was arrested—solidifying the connection as implacable as the evidence that led to his cuffs, as detailed by CBS12.
Demario Jones, the other suspect in this harrowing case, was arrested earlier in the week and faces similar charges of first-degree murder. This twin arrest marks not only the closure of a heartbreaking chapter for the St. Fort family but also serves as a grim reminder of the relentless pursuit that ensues when justice beckons. The two alleged shooters painted a dark evening with gunfire that snuffed out an ascending life when officers responded to the sound of the ill-fated shots on Australian Avenue, according to CBS12 investigation details.
