A driver has been arrested in San Francisco after her vehicle crashed into pedestrians at a bus stop, killing two and injuring others, with one victim later dying at the hospital. Mary Fong Lau, 78, was booked for three counts of felony vehicular manslaughter, among other charges, following the collision on March 16 near West Portal that also left an infant critically injured, the San Francisco Police Department reported.
The incident occurred at around 12:13 p.m. at the corner of Ulloa Street and Lennox Way, where Lau's vehicle hit a bus stop, resulting in fatalities and injuries. First responders, which included SFPD Officers and SFFD Firefighters, attempted to save the victims, but two were declared dead at the scene. According to a statement obtained by the San Francisco Police Department, "this incident was a heartbreaking tragedy."
Mayor London Breed addressed the calamity, stating on her official X page, "Today there was a tragic collision in West Portal. Two lives were lost, including a child. Three more are in the hospital. I’ve just visited the scene and it is heartbreaking." Breed highlighted the city's collective grief and emphasized that support for the victims' families was essential during this time.
The ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash is being led by the SFPD Traffic Unit and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). Shortly after the occurrence, SFMTA extended sympathies and confirmed their participation, "Early this afternoon, someone drove a vehicle onto the sidewalk, and into a bus shelter at Ulloa and Lenox at West Portal," Hoodline reported.
