Fire terror struck the heart of East Boston yesterday, as police collared a woman believed to be behind a series of arson attacks. Genesis Hurtado, 26, was apprehended Monday morning after allegedly setting the latest blaze, according to a report from the Boston Police Department.
The drama unfolded when officers from District A-7 and the Fire Investigations Unit swooped into the locale of 184 Border Street around 10:00 AM. Upon reaching the reported fire, an unnamed source flagged the officers down, pointing them toward the fleeing suspect later identified as Hurtado. In the area of 31 Central Square, Hurtado was stopped by officers and swiftly handcuffed while the Boston Fire Department quenched the flames, fortunately leaving no one injured.
Authorities were already on alert for the Chelsea resident, tying her to an earlier arson case with the help of a BRIC flyer that highlighted an incident on March 16 at 210 Border Street. According to the same police report, a thorough investigation prompted Hurtado's arrest, implicating her in both incidents.
Hurtado is now facing serious charges that paint a dangerous picture of a pyromaniac at work. The charges against her include three counts each of arson and burning personal property, as detailed by the Boston Police Department. This suspected firestarter is slated for arraignment in East Boston District Court, where the scales of justice await to weigh her fate.
