As Austin's downtown becomes teeming with the influx of festival-goers at South by Southwest, Austin-Travis County EMS is revamping its approach to emergency responses. The dense crowds and significant road closures present unique challenges, prompting first responders to adapt their strategies for ensuring public safety.
Eric Gordon, Commander of ATCEMS, highlighted the difficulties in navigating the packed streets. "With the amount of road closures and the increase in pedestrian traffic, it makes it challenging to get around downtown to folks that need help," Gordon said, as reported by KXAN. To counteract these obstacles, ATCEMS has established a 'city within a city' downtown, equipping the area with a patient collection point that Gordon describes as "basically, a large tent that’s a field hospital."
"If it's your family member or you, you want us there to start caring for you as fast as possible," EMS Special Events Commander Kevin Parker explained in an interview with CBS Austin. Parker described the benefits of the medic-motorcycles: "On 6th Street, they can use the alleyway to access the nearest cross-street to a 911 call." This strategy ensures a swifter reach to emergencies without unduly affecting the rest of the city's emergency services.
Austin local Ashley Alizor added, "I feel like there’s a good amount of protection for all of the people here," in a statement obtained by KXAN.
Looking at previous festival statistics, ATCEMS's proactive measures have shown potential for enhancing public safety amidst the revelry of SXSW. With a tent ready to serve as a makeshift field hospital and a mini fleet of nimble emergency vehicles, Austin's first responders gear up for the surge of incidents typical of such a major event, confident in their readiness to protect and serve.
