An Austin man has been convicted of murder following the tragic killing of his wife, an incident that tore at the heartstrings of a local community. According to information provided by the Travis County District Attorney's office and reported by KXAN, James Neves, 57, was found guilty last Friday of the murder of Vanessa Neves, age 41.
Vivid memories from the night of the crime on Oct. 26, 2021, linger in the northwest Austin community where police say Vanessa was found shot to death inside their home. During a domestic dispute between the couple, James called 911 after the shooting, admitting to authorities he shot her. With their two children in the home at the time, who fortunately were unscathed, the domestic disturbance ended in fatal violence.
Details of the arrest were initially reported by FOX 7 Austin. James was charged with first-degree murder and taken into custody at the scene. Despite efforts by first responders, Vanessa succumbed to her injuries. After the arrest, James Neves's bail was set at $750,000.
While the two children were present during the ordeal, they were removed safely and are now with immediate family. Police have assured the public that this was an isolated incident, with no further threat looming over the community. As the family grieves and seeks justice, detectives continue to urge anyone with additional information or video of the incident to come forward, offering various anonymous tip lines and contact methods.
The jury, which convicted James on Friday, is currently deliberating his sentence, as reported by the District Attorney's office. As the community reflects on this sobering sequence of events, the weight of the verdict and the forthcoming sentencing are awaited.
