Boca Raton has scored a double win at the 2024 Safe Streets Summit, scooping up two prestigious awards for its efforts to make the city's thoroughfares safer and more accessible. The city was recognized during the summit in Miami — a joint effort by Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization, Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, and Palm Beach Transportation Planning Agency — which aims to foster a sense of unity in Southeast Florida through safer, more sustainable streets. Council Member Yvette Drucker snagged the Complete Streets Champion Award for her leading role in promoting Complete Streets in Palm Beach County, while the City of Boca Raton nabbed the Complete Streets Community Award for its significant strides in implementing the initiative and effectively engaging with the community.
Boca Raton's recent initiatives that have helped it earn this recognition include Mobility Week events, pedestrian safety improvements, and the implementation of new bike lanes and a bike box; not to mention their successful Walk & Roll to School event, the establishment of a new Complete Streets Policy, and the major revisioning of East Palmetto Park Road, according to a city announcement. "Safer streets that more efficiently get us where we need to go is a critical priority for Boca Raton and earning the 2024 Safe Streets Summit Complete Street Champion Award proves our collaborative, solutions-focused approach is working," Drucker commented in a celebratory tone.
In addition to the recent accolades, Boca Raton has also launched Florida Bicycle Month this March with a variety of activities promoting bike use amongst its residents — the city takes pride in its extensive network of over 84 miles of bike lanes and multi-use paths suitable for riders of all levels. The city's municipal services director, Zach Bihr, highlighted the contribution of Boca Raton's traffic professionals and their ongoing dedication to improving all modes of transportation within the city, as they forge partnerships across the South Florida region, this was noted in the aforementioned statement.
The double award win signifying the city's commitment to safer streets was proudly shared on Twitter with congratulations directed at both Council Member Drucker and the Municipal Services Department, as the city continues its strategic thrust towards enhancing mobility and connectivity as evidenced by several initiatives up its sleeve including Mobility Week events, pedestrian safety enhancements, and a steadfast Complete Streets Policy, details of which can be found on the city's website as per their post on X.
