Young girls in Boston can look forward to honing their athletic skills and boosting their well-being at the city's All Girls Sports and Wellness Festival slated for April. Mayor Michelle Wu, teaming up with the Boston Parks and Recreation Department and Boston Centers for Youth & Families, has rolled out the invite for local girls aged 7 to 14 to take part in the festival, which coincides with the Boston Public Schools vacation week in April.
Last year's event saw a wave of enthusiasm that has swept the festival from its original two-day schedule to an expanded, action-packed three-day program. According to the official announcement by the city, the 2024 edition will feature a medley of sports such as basketball, swimming, and rock climbing along with workshops on health, wellness, and self-defense – all aimed at invigorating young minds and bodies. Girls from across the city will have the chance to not only play but also to hear from speakers that will encourage them to live active, healthy lifestyles.
The festivities will kick off on April 17 and 18 at various BCYF community centers around Boston, where girls can engage in both indoor and outdoor activities. The grand finale, set for April 19 at the University of Massachusetts Boston, promises to be a high point with participants from all the BCYF centers coming together. To ensure everyone can attend, round-trip transportation from the community centers to the university campus will be provided, as detailed on the city's announcement.
Those wishing to participate must pre-register on the city's website. Event check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. on each day of the festival. To gear up for the activities parents are reminded that their daughters should bring the right clothing, and that includes swimsuits and towels for anyone diving into aquatic fun. Mayor Wu's office ensured that a complimentary lunch will be served to all the young athletes.
