Cambridge citizens are getting a say in the city’s future in a big way. From March 7 through March 17, residents as young as 12 can cast their votes on how to allocate a hefty $2 million in the city’s 10th Participatory Budgeting cycle. The funding, which has doubled since the last cycle, is earmarked for public-benefitting projects to be implemented by the municipality itself, as detailed on the city’s official announcement.
Breaking down barriers to ensure all voices can be heard, the City has broadened the types of initiatives that qualify for the cash infusion. Projects ranging from capital to operating expenditures, which upkeep with existing city policies, are now on the ballot. Votes can be cast online, via phone, or in the flesh at scheduled PB voting events, with more details found on the city's dedicated participatory budgeting page.
Last year's cycle saw a surge in community engagement, with over 8,700 residents making their preferences known—a 15 percent increase from the year prior. Cambridge’s innovative approach to budgeting has previously funded projects like pedestrian-friendly crosswalk lights and accessible playground equipment. This round of funding promises to allow for even more transformative works, with the city calling on its citizenry to break records again by aiming for 10,000 votes.
Over 1,100 ideas were tossed into the ring by engaged locals last fall, and after months of refinement, 20 pitches are now locked in on the ballot. These final proposals were diligently churned out by over 70 volunteer delegates, who committed their time to ensure a diverse range of ideas made it to the voting stage. As the voting window draws to a close, anticipation climbs for the results party, where successful projects will be unveiled in the civic celebration at City Hall's Sullivan Chamber—complete with complimentary grub and libations.
The program’s track record speaks for itself, with more than 56,000 votes counted and $7.5 million allocated since its inception in 2014. The anticipation is palpable; the potential for innovation and community betterment vast. For those looking to make their mark on Cambridge’s landscape, participating in the PB process is just a click, call, or step away.
