Castro's Bonita Taqueria Closes, Tacos El Tucán Opening SoonPhoto: Steven Bracco/Hoodline

After four years in the Castro, Bonita Taqueria y Rotisserie has closed at 3600 16th Street (at Market and Noe streets).

However, the restaurant space won't sit vacant for long. Tijuana-style tacos restaurant Tacos El Tucán will be opening soon in the space below Castro bar The Lookout.

Bonita's official last day was Sunday and on Monday workers could be seen at the restaurant putting up a new sign in the windows and on the awning.

Hoodline readers may recall that in 2019, Squat & Gobble closed after 22 years and was converted into an outpost of five-year-old Marina sister restaurant, Bonita Taqueria y Rotisserie (2257 Chestnut St.) by owner Issa Sweidan.

Tacos El Tucán is owned by Alfredo Padilla. In 2019, Padilla opened the first Tacos El Tucán in the city of Richmond.

Sweidan and Padilla did not respond to Hoodline's request for comment.

Earlier this month, Sweidan closed the Marina outpost of brunch spot and crepie Squat & Gobble (2263 Chestnut Street). Bonita locations in the Marina and along Polk Street remain open.

Tacos El Tucán's menu includes standard Mexican fare including burritos ($5.95-13.95), tacos ($2.75-3.85), quesatacos ($3.95-4.15), red tacos ($4,29-4.69), and keto tacos ($3.95-4.15), mulitas ($4.50-$5.25), quesadillas ($7-11.95), bowls ($9.95-11.95), fries ($6-13.95), and nachos ($12.95).

Customers can also order the extra large El Tucán Burrito for $32.95.

At this time, it's unclear if Sweidan has transferred the beer and wine license from Bonita to Taco El Tucán.

News of Tacos El Tucán's opening comes after a handful of businesses have either opened or are coming soon.
