Chicago law enforcement came under fire early Monday, as bullets shattered a police cruiser's back window in a chilling incident near Chicago State University. According to CBS Chicago, the police vehicle was targeted while patrolling the 9400 block of Cottage Grove Avenue shortly before the witching hour of 3 a.m.
The officers, fortunately unharmed, found themselves in a fraught position—they were in the heart of the South Side when the ambush unfolded, their presence pronounced by the distinctive marks of their squad car and even after their rear window was reduced to a spiderweb of cracks and splinters the officers held their fire, their restraint at the moment standing stark against the echo of gunshots that had perforated the quiet of the predawn, police confirmed the officers did not return fire. Amidst the search for answers, no arrests have been announced by authorities.
Details are emerging from the investigation led by Area Two detectives, as reported by WGN-TV. The officers involved were on assignment from the 5th District, suggesting that they were perhaps familiar faces in the Chatham neighborhood where the shooting occurred.
While police work to peel away the layers of this near-tragic encounter and the community feels the ripples of violence it has yet to be seen what impact this will have on the tension between the police and the police, no suspects have been brought into custody this time.
