Downtown Joliet Loses Azul Celeste After Nearly Three Years on Chicago Street

Azul Celeste Bar & Grill has closed its doors at 307 N. Chicago St. in downtown Joliet, ending a run of roughly three years for the Mexican restaurant known locally for its steak tacos and margaritas. The cantina wrapped up daily dining operations on Sunday, August 16, following a farewell gathering held the night before.

The closure was first reported by Shaw Local, whose Herald-News section noted the restaurant had become a fixture on the north end of downtown. According to the restaurant's Facebook page, Azul Celeste thanked the community for its business on August 12, telling patrons that customers had become more than just customers over the years.

A Family Cantina Built Around Downtown Foot Traffic

Azul Celeste opened in November 2023 under owners Laura Montiel and her husband, Pilo Corral, after the Joliet City Council approved a Class B liquor license for the venue that September, according to Patch. The couple set out to build a family-run cantina that would help revitalize that stretch of downtown, and they specifically targeted weekday lunch traffic from employees at the Will County Government Office Building located directly across the street, per the same outlet's reporting.

Before Azul Celeste moved in, the building had sat vacant for several years after previously housing a St. Vincent De Paul thrift store. The property spans roughly 4,400 square feet and dates back to 1940, according to MLS records for the site.

Birria Ramen and Micheladas Built a Loyal Following

Beyond standard Mexican fare, Azul Celeste drew local dining attention for specialty items including birria ramen, cochinita pibil, micheladas and house margaritas, according to a Wanderlog entry cataloging the restaurant. Those offerings helped the cantina stand out in local restaurant guides even as the surrounding commercial landscape shifted around it.

Property Hit the Market Weeks Before Closure

Signs of the coming transition surfaced weeks before the final closure. In July 2026, real estate firm Herencia Residential & Commercial posted a lease listing for 307 N. Chicago St., offering the turn-key venue at $23 per square foot on a gross lease and advertising its commercial kitchen, bar, banquet space and Route 66 frontage, according to Patch. Joliet City Center Partnership executive director Emmanuel Lopez shared that listing on social media, publicly signaling the pending business turnover ahead of the restaurant's final days.

Downtown's Shifting Mexican Dining Scene

Azul Celeste's exit comes about six months after another major Mexican dining establishment, Casa Catrina Mexican Heritage Cuisine, opened inside Joliet's historic Union Station in February 2026, as reported by Shaw Local. That restaurant filled a municipal space that had sat empty since MyGrain Brewing Company closed in 2023 after a six-year run, illustrating how city officials have continued working to recruit new dining anchors downtown even as smaller independent spots navigate thin margins and changing foot traffic.

For now, the storefront that once served steak tacos and margaritas to Will County employees and downtown regulars sits ready for its next tenant, with the commercial kitchen, bar and banquet space still intact for whoever takes over the Route 66-facing address next.
