A would-be robber was gunned down early Friday morning in an exchange of gunfire with a concealed carry license holder in Chicago's Auburn Gresham neighborhood, authorities said. The incident played out just before the cusp of dawn, around 5:30 a.m., on the 1500 block of West 82nd Street, as reported by CBS Chicago.

The victim, 60, was accosted by another man who, brandishing a firearm, made a demand for his property. Having a valid Firearms Owner Identification (FOID) card and a CCL, the victim fired back during the robbery attempt, ending with the assailant suffering multiple gunshot wounds. Displaying a firearm himself, the victim later found himself being treated for gunshot wounds in his back and left arm, in stable condition, at Christ Hospital.

The identity of the alleged assailant has yet to be released pending notification of kin, according to information provided by the Cook County medical examiner's office. The man was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center. The scene, later scrutinized by police, yielded two firearms that had fallen silent after the fatal altercation.

The 60-year-old victim, also taken to Christ Medical Center, is reportedly in stable condition following the shootout, which left him injured in the back and arm. This detail was confirmed by FOX 32 Chicago, in the aftermath of the shooting that startled an otherwise calm Chicago morning.

Detectives from the area are digging into the circumstances surrounding the shootout.
