Chaos erupted in a quiet Chula Vista neighborhood early Wednesday morning when gunfire rang out, leaving one man dead and another severely wounded. According to a press release by the Chula Vista Police Department, officers responded just after 1:30 a.m. to the Salerno Luxury Rentals apartment complex on reports of shots heard on the 1300 Block of Calle Verona.

The first responders found an unresponsive man with a gunshot wound to the head outside an apartment. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene, an act of violence that seemed to suddenly puncture the still night. His identity has yet to be released. In the same vicinity, a 24-year-old man was discovered inside the apartment, suffering a gunshot wound to his face. Despite his injuries, he remained conscious enough to quickly be transported to a hospital for serious injuries.

Details surrounding the shooting are still emerging, but the initial investigation suggests that the attack was targeted. The Police Department's detectives are currently working to piece together the events leading up to the shooting by gathering evidence and speaking with potential witnesses.
