Chaos erupted in Wakefield, Massachusetts yesterday evening as a fire broke out in a strip mall, forcing firefighters from across the region to race against the clock in a daring rescue of exotic reptiles. The Lowell Street retail hub, which includes the likes of Dino's Brick Oven Pizza, became a scene of emergency response when smoke was initially spotted at the pizza establishment. Not long after, it became apparent that the actual blaze was taking place at North Shore Animal Academy, a neighboring business in the complex, according to NBC Boston.
Through the thick haze, firefighters discovered a host of cold-blooded captives trapped within the inferno. Braving the smoke, crews from five different communities, including Melrose, Lynnfield, North Reading, Stoneham, and Woburn, alongside local Wakefield units, rushed to ferry numerous tanks and terrariums to safety. The reptiles, many of which depend on regulating their body temperature, were at significant risk from the creeping cold as well as the flames. Quickly, the helpless animals were moved into cars and ambulances in the wake of the fire, as reported by Boston 25 News.
The effort to subdue the flames paid off as firefighters managed to contain the fire to just the pet store, preventing it from spreading to the few other businesses nestled in the strip. No injuries to people or critters were reported, bringing a sigh of relief to all involved. Subsequently, they focused on ventilating the building from pervasive smoke which has spread throughout the complex.
Wakefield Fire Chief Michael Sullivan confirmed in a statement obtained by Boston 25 News that "no humans, civilians or firefighters, were injured during the response." In the battle against the blaze, local board of health officials also descended upon the scene, challenged with the task to ensure that food sources from the array of restaurants tucked into the mall were not compromised from the smoke that hangs like an unwanted guest within their quarters.
As of now, the source of the fire remains a mystery under active investigation, leaving business owners, patrons, and the Wakefield community awaiting answers. More details are expected to emerge as officials sift through the char and ash of what was once a refuge for the scaly and the slithering.
