Violence erupted at a Chicago gas station Wednesday morning, leaving a man and woman injured after a hail of gunfire, according to authorities. The shooting occurred in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, a section of the city's West Side that continues to be scarred by sporadic shootings and persistent crime.
The incident took place near the intersection of Fulton Street and Sacramento Boulevard around 10:45 a.m., when a male suspect emerged from a sedan and unleashed a barrage of bullets toward the victims, CBS News Chicago reports. Police said a 25-year-old man sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, alongside a 21-year-old woman who was shot five times in the right leg she was also taken to Stroger, where she has since been listed in stable condition.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the gunman remained at large, igniting a feverish manhunt by local law enforcement. Area 3 detectives have taken up the case, delving into the grisly details in hopes of piecing together the events that led up to the public daylight shooting, which has once more rattled the community.
Chicago Police Department's official media incident report confirms the male and female victims were outside when the attacker, for reasons still unknown, decided to stop his dark-colored sedan and attack, following which the shooter fled in the aforementioned vehicle, the urgency and despair of the moment were palpable, as the wounded were attended to and whisked away for emergency care.
