A fatal crash shattered the tranquility of Royal Palm Beach on Monday when a man behind the wheel of a stolen car lost control and slammed into an oncoming truck. Rolando Rancano, a 37-year-old from Labelle, Florida, was identified as the driver who crossed the line of life and law just after 2:30 p.m. on Ponce de Leon Street, CBS12 reports. The stolen 2019 Audi S5 he was operating accelerated out of its lane during a rightward curve and directly into the path of a 2018 Nissan Titan, which was towing a trailer.
In a reckless attempt to not only outpace, but also outmaneuver the curvature of the road, Rancano's drive ended abruptly as both his vehicle and the Titan, driven by 22-year-old Juan Francisco Juan of Riviera Beach, were sent spinning, the trailer toppling in the chaos. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office confirmed the violent collision was also a case of criminal activity, with the Audi having been reported stolen minutes before from a nearby Publix, as per WPTV.
Rancano was declared dead at the scene, a final chapter penned in the harsh language of speed and theft. The Palm Beach County Fire Rescue team pronounced the unfortunate end to what began as a criminal act escalating to a tragic event. The Northbound Nissan's driver and his two passengers were left with serious injuries and needed to be hurried to St. Mary's Medical Center.
The Sheriff's Office detailed the catastrophic moments, stating that as the Audi approached the sharp curve, it was "traveling too fast to safely negotiate the curve," as reported by WPTV. This failure to maintain control forced the car to veer widely across the double yellow lines, violently crashing head-on with the oncoming Nissan.
