Chaos erupted in Miami Shores this weekend when a man, initially detained for an altercation at a local Dollar Tree, bolted from police custody at North Shore Medical Center. According to Local 10, the subject caused a ruckus with shoppers at 9055 Biscayne Boulevard prior to his arrest for battering a police officer.
After being tased during the scuffle where he got aggressive with a police officer—and subsequently developing a health complaint—the man was transported to the hospital for high blood pressure, stated WSVN. Despite the seriousness of his initial aggression and his medical concerns, the man found a moment to flee and he remains at large as authorities continue their hunt in the vicinity of Northwest 99th Street and 12th Avenue.
Police refrained from revealing the identity of the fugitive but have set up a wide perimeter in the neighborhood, actively searching for him; however, there was no success in apprehending him as of late Sunday night. The situation has prompted a call to the public for assistance. Anyone with information about the man's whereabouts is urged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS—and remember, informants can stay anonymous and might be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
Miami residents in the affected area are dealing with the ripple effects of this weekend's drama as the search continues, police remain vigilant and the community looks on with the unease that always accompanies an escapee on the run. Meanwhile, authorities have been tight-lipped about the details of the escape itself, how a man in police custody in a hospital setting could slip through the cracks seems to be a question left dangling in the humid Florida air.
