
A chilling dispute in Memphis escalated to violence when Antonio Holmes allegedly shot and killed his mother's dog after igniting her backyard. Holmes, 30, has been slapped with a slew of charges, according to reports from local authorities. Detailing the series of events, his mother called the police late Saturday morning to report the confrontation that began with a fire set by her son in her backyard, Action News 5 states.
The argument between Holmes and his mother, as described in a statement obtained by Action News 5, swiftly moved indoors where it grew heated. When the family’s dog began to bark amidst the altercation, Holmes purportedly struck it with a gas can. Holmes' brother's attempt to intervene was met with Antonio allegedly pointing a handgun at him. It was then that the mother's dog entered the room and was fatally shot.
Holmes' rap sheet includes a criminal history that traces back to 2022. He now faces charges of possession of a firearm, evading arrest, animal cruelty, and two counts of reckless endangerment, as reported by DogTime. The severity of the incident has been compounded by the charge of convicted felon in possession of an handgun, hinting at Holmes' troubled past with the law.
Bond for Holmes has been set at a steep $100,000 as he remains in custody, per information by WREG News Channel 3. The altercation occurred in the 800 block of Alma Street, where police responded at approximately 11:30 a.m. A witness reportedly told police Holmes became aggressive after being asked to douse the blaze he had set. Holmes’ current charges include aggravated assault and aggravated cruelty to animals, which reflect the gravity of his alleged actions during the Saturday morning violence.
