Miami Beach is set to catch waves of joy as the 16th Annual Surf Camp for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) takes to the sands March 25-29. Children with ASD will be hitting the beach to learn not just about surfing but also swimming, oceanography and meteorology, as reported by the City of Miami Beach.
Taking place at South Pointe Park, the Autism Surf Camp boasts a partnership with the City of Miami Beach Parks and Recreation Department, University of Miami, and Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD). Mowi USA, LLC, with their generous contribution, are making the event possible for the youngsters who are ready to hang ten.
Miami Beach City Manager Alina Hudak was quoted expressing the sheer enthusiasm for the event, "Everyone who spends time with the children in this beautiful event comes away with a profound feeling of joy," she said. The camp, a yearly highlight since 2008—pausing only for the pandemic years—ensures a safe and educational experience with the close watch of lifeguards.
"We are honored to be co-hosting the 16th annual Autism Surf Camp with our remarkable partners at the Miami Beach Parks and Recreation Department," Dr. Michael Alessandri, CARD executive director, told the City of Miami Beach's official website. Through their efforts, the camp has continuously impacted the lives of campers, their families, and volunteers.
The National Institute of Mental Health describes ASD as a neurological and developmental disorder that influences communication, behavior, and learning. Symptoms typically emerge in the first two years of life. CARD, a key player in enhancing the potential of individuals with ASD, provides pivotal support to families within Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe Counties.
