In a decisive move, Miami city commissioners have scrapped a contentious land deal for a $10M sports dome, following the withdrawal of the couple David and Leila Centner from the agreement. According to WSVN, a vote was cast on Thursday to terminate the contract concerning the Biscayne Park property located at 19th Street and Northeast Second Avenue.
The Centners, who run Centner Academy, had initially struck a deal with the city in 2022 under which they pledged $10 million towards the construction of the sports facility. Despite their intention for school use, they had faced numerous public opposition, including from iPrep Academy, which sought the land for their own expansion and to accommodate affordable workforce housing, a plan endorsed by Miami-Dade District 2 School Board Member Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall for its benefit to students. Hours before the vote, David Centner announced that due to "too much harassment," they were pulling out, as they described, what felt like an ambush.
"It shouldn't be this hard to give away $10 million to the City of Miami. It really shouldn't," said Centner, indicating a frustration with the unfolding events. This deal, which now lies in tatters, was also notably linked to the state's corruption case involving former Miami Commissioner Alex Díaz de la Portilla, who currently faces criminal charges, as reported by WSVN.
"We are still open to improving the park. We are not interested in spending $10 million in a dome sports park," the Centners said, defending themselves against claims of corruption. After the commissioners have said that they will deliberate on the future of this land, with the Centners standing aside, Leila Centner has expressed support for others willing to contribute to the park's beautification. The Miami Herald underscored this sentiment in a brief statement posted shortly following the announcement.
The city commissioners' decision to revoke the deal opens up new possibilities for the Biscayne Park land, which remains a public asset. Although the Centners' departure from the deal marked the end of one chapter in this ongoing saga, it seems to have paved the way for a new beginning involving iPrep Academy's ambitions and the community's call for more educational and housing opportunities. Now, the commissioners' further discussions will shape what is to come for this contentious piece of Miami real estate.
