A Tennessee mother of five tragically lost her life after undergoing a Brazilian butt lift procedure performed by a Miami doctor who wasn’t cleared to operate, a lawsuit filed by her family claims. Erica Russell, 33, died in June 2021 after her operation at Seduction Cosmetic Center's Coral Gables facility, where Dr. John Sampson punctured her liver, bladder, and intestines, alleging catastrophic incompetence that resulted in the patient's cardiac arrest just over two hours post-operation, as reported by NBC News.

The lawsuit contends that Sampson performed plastic surgery procedures at the center despite not being approved to do so. According to the filed complaint, he provided the Florida Department of Health with a letter stating specifically that he "does not perform surgical procedures at the defendant Seduction's facility", a narrative shared by NBC News. Nonetheless, he allegedly engaged in such operations between April and June 2021, one of which devastatingly resulted in the untimely demise of Ms. Russell.

Russell’s death was attributed to pulmonary fat emboli and bleeding due to the surgery, as per the lawsuit, detailed by the Miami Herald. The family's attorneys accuse Seduction of using falsified documents to misrepresent Sampson's qualifications and privileges, a serious charge for a facility already under the microscope. Seduction’s president and CEO, Gretel Jardon, was not named as a defendant, and neither she nor Seduction has provided comments on the allegations, despite efforts to reach them for a statement. "It’s unbelievable that a surgery center could allow this to happen," Stephen Cain, one of the family's attorneys, told the Miami Herald. "This doctor should never have been performing this surgery, much less seven surgeries in one day."

The Brazilian butt lift is known to carry significant risks, with the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery cautioning against potential complications that can be life-threatening. From the years of 2009 to 2022, there were 93 cosmetic surgery-related deaths among U.S. citizens in the Dominican Republic, according to the CDC. A staggering 92% of these fatalities involved gluteal fat transfer procedures, widely referred to as Brazilian butt lifts. What seemingly should have been a routine aesthetic enhancement for Ms. Russell transformed into a sorrowful chapter for her family, conveying an ominous reminder regarding the inherent perils of such elective procedures. Attorney Michael Levine, representing Ms. Russell's family, expressed to the WSMV, "What happened to Ms. Russell should have never happened—this is assembly line medicine, and that’s what killed her."
