Miami residents faced a wet and tumultuous morning today as showers and possible thunderstorms swept through the region. The forecast noted a 70% chance of precipitation with new rainfall amounts possibly reaching between a half and three quarters of an inch, according to the National Weather Service.
The morning storms forced commuters to contend with heavy rainfall, disrupting travel, with a Severe Thunderstorm Warning that had been in place until 6 a.m. for areas including Hialeah, Coral Gables, and Hollywood. This warning has since been canceled. Despite the chaos, the worst is believed to move offshore by mid-morning, leaving conditions warm, and muggy but damp.
According to NBC Miami, the main threats from the early storms were damaging winds reaching up to 60 mph, and frequent lightning. The severe weather has passed for now but scattered showers are likely to stay until mid-morning.
But the peace is short-lived as another round of storms is expected to fire up by afternoon, with winds and hail posing as the primary concerns. With evening plans on the line, residents are bracing for a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 a.m., and Southwest winds at around 9 mph. Looking ahead, Thursday offers a respite in the early hours, with a reduced 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9 a.m., transitioning to partly sunny skies and a high expected to hover around 81 degrees.
