The manhunt for the 41-year-old, who possesses language skills in Farsi, French, Spanish, and English, comes amidst concerns of retaliatory acts for the 2020 US airstrike that killed Major General Qasem Soleimani.
According to the FBI alert, Farahani has been recruiting individuals for various operations on American soil as an act of vengeance for Soleimani's demise, an action approved by then-President Donald Trump which later prompted an arrest warrant from Iraq for Trump himself; this development threatens the peace and may result in diplomatic tensions as the FBI intensifies its search for the suspect who also reportedly has ties to both Iran and Venezuela, as revealed by a New York Post article. Farahani's alleged espionage activities also include surveillance targeted at religious sites, businesses, and other strategic facilities in the United States. The FBI has appealed to the public, seeking information that could lead to his capture, circulating a wanted poster featuring his photo, detailing his physical description as having brown eyes and brown and gray hair.
In light of these threats, high-profile targets such as Pompeo and Brian Hook, who served as Trump's special envoy for Iran have been placed under nonstop security protection, following the exposure of the threat against them, with Semafor reporting the increased vigilance. Last year, another member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Shahram Poursafi, was indicted for an alleged plot to kill John Bolton, Trump's former national security advisor, the indictment further underscoring the peril faced by former officials.
