Roberto Baez, a student at Coral Reef High School's medical program, found himself thrust into action when his father suffered a medical emergency at home, as per CBS News Miami.
"It felt unreal to me, I wasn't really emotional in the moment but after, when I got to call my dad, after he woke up in the hospital that same night, I got a little emotional, joy and relief," Baez recounted to CBS News Miami; the teen was playing a video game when his mother's screams summoned him to the dire scene, prompting him to tap into his recent cadet and medical training from school – he checked for his father's pulse, found none, and started doing compressions, which he attributes to adrenaline and muscle memory. The program at Coral Reef High School, praised for its comprehensive coursework, including CPR and other emergency procedures, has been highlighted through Baez's actions.
Baez's teacher, Jorge Sanabria, spoke to the value of such educational programs, he said, "What better way to use your skills than to save somebody," as noted in CBS News Miami. These programs are designed to lay the groundwork for students interested in medical, nursing, firefighting, or EMT careers by imparting necessary lifesaving knowledge and techniques.

Emotional reunions followed the incident as Baez's father, though still in recovery, expressed tearful gratitude to his son – the young man jokingly said to his father after his awakening, "yeah, I saved you bro," prompting more tears and a heartfelt hug when the father returned home.
