A tragic altercation at a Nashville bar has culminated in the death of a 26-year-old man after a confrontation with a security guard turned fatal. Austin Turner of Hendersonville was pronounced dead following injuries sustained during a fracas with 36-year-old Richard Cornelius, a licensed security guard at the popular Nashville bar, Tin Roof. The incident occurred on February 18 but resulted in Turner's passing weeks later, as confirmed by the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD).
An initial denial of entry on Demonbreun Street was said to spark the conflict that ended with Turner being struck and falling to the ground, unconscious. According to The Tennessean, Cornelius now faces charges of aggravated assault, with discussions underway with the district attorney about potential subsequent charges following Turner's death. After the attack, released on a $25,000 bond, Cornelius was arrested and later.
Video evidence reviewed by the police showed Cornelius swinging at Turner multiple times outside of Tin Roof, landing a final blow that knocked Turner unconscious. Left lying on the pavement, Turner was eventually tended to by medics upon their arrival. WSMV4 reported that Turner's family confirmed he would be taken off life support, heralding a tragic end to a young life.
Compounding the gravity of the situation, Turner's mother set up a GoFundMe page detailing the severity of her son's injuries, which included a skull fracture leading to a subdural hematoma, necessitating an emergency craniotomy. He remained in a coma until his passing at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), as outlined by WKRN. The Tin Roof CEO, Bob Franklin, extended his condolences, asserting in a statement sent by a Reed Public Relations employee that the establishment is "fully cooperating to aid law enforcement in their efforts and will continue to do so. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Austin Turner."
