Phoenix is about to turn a page as Rita Hamilton, the city's long-standing City Librarian, is set to retire after a 13-year tenure. Hamilton has announced she will step down in April, marking the end of a nearly 50 years chapter in her professional life dedicated to cultivating library services. During her time at the helm, she has steered Phoenix Public Library through various initiatives, integrating technology and expanding resources to better serve the community.
Hamilton began her storied career as a student volunteer and climbed the ranks through various roles at Pima County Library, Nashville Public Library, and Scottsdale Public Library before taking charge in Phoenix in 2011. Under her guidance, Phoenix has seen significant improvements in library operations, including the development of specialized services like College Depot, StartUp PHX, and PHXWorks. In a statement obtained by the Phoenix Government's official newsroom, Hamilton stated, “It has been my great honor to be part of many of Phoenix Public Library's achievements; especially serving the young readers, families, life-long learners and all those that look to the library for life improving information and resources."
The city's leadership has expressed gratitude for Hamilton's contributions. Jeff Barton, Phoenix City Manager, in a release praised Hamilton for her forward-thinking partnerships, notably highlighting Public Health endeavors that thrived because of the Phoenix Public Library team. Barton also announced that Mitch Menchaca will assume the role of Interim City Librarian effective today. The transition is planned to be smooth and uninterrupted as the city launches a nationwide search to find Hamilton's successor.
As Rita Hamilton's final chapter at Phoenix Public Library nears its conclusion, the city prepares to script a new narrative for its library system. With 125 years of history, Phoenix Public Library stands at a juncture of continuity and change. The city extends its best wishes to Hamilton for her retirement, which is slated for April 5, 2024. Future developments and announcements about the national recruitment will be shared through Phoenix Public Library's social media channels, including their official website and via handles like @phoenixpubliclibrary and @phxlibrary.
