The ringleader of a notorious human smuggling operation, Martin Garcia-Velazquez, was handed down a 7½-year prison sentence on March 15, as authorities in Arizona work to crack down on illegal immigration activity. Garcia-Velazquez, 42, known colloquially by the moniker "Tucan," entered a guilty plea to a conspiracy charge back in September 2023, agreeing that he had a hand in transporting and providing safe houses for no less than 1,000 undocumented immigrants. His plea was to conspiracy to transport and harbor illegal aliens for profit,as reported by reported ABC15.

Beyond his prison term, Garcia-Velazquez will also be required to serve a 36-month supervised release period and against his will must pay a $5,000 mandatory special assessment. His organization funneled countless souls from the Mexico border to the city of Phoenix, taking advantage of their hopes and exploiting their dreams for his own economic gain. The detail came out as part of an extensive law enforcement effort that involved multiple state and federal agencies, as reported by KTAR News.

The case saw not only Garcia-Velazquez standing trial, but also three other co-conspirators who faced the music for their roles in the shady smuggling syndicate. Jesus Torres-Aguilera, Elmer Rene Del Cid Santos, and Angelico Roa-Joachin all received varying sentences, having been found complicit in the peddling of human lives across the border. Law enforcement was able to also seize more than $1 million, firearms, ammunition, and vehicles as they dismantled the operation.
