A small plane went down on a Key Largo golf course this afternoon, leaving the pilot injured and requiring air transport to a hospital, officials said. The crash happened near the Ocean Reef Club's private airstrip, according to Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities responded to the incident at the club's golf course at around 12:45 p.m., following the crash of the aircraft that took off from Pompano Airport roughly 40 minutes earlier, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office stated, and, the Florida Highway Patrol were on the scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Images from the scene showed the aircraft resting on its belly amidst the manicured grass of the golf course, a stark juxtaposition against the leisurely backdrop. The single-engine plane appeared largely intact as it was surveyed by law enforcement and emergency personnel.
The pilot, who was the only individual aboard the aircraft at the time of the crash, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial South Hospital, as confirmed by both WSVN and CBS News Miami. Their current condition has not been released to the public.
No other injuries were reported on the ground at the popular vacation spot, which is frequented by golf enthusiasts and tourists alike. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Agency are expected to arrive on scene to begin an investigation into the cause of the crash.
