A Schertz Elementary teacher is behind bars after being accused of indecency with a child, a second-degree felony charge. Gabriel Cantu, 42, from San Antonio, was arrested following a report of a sex offense involving a minor at the school on March 11.

According to KENS5, the mother of the student involved encouraged her daughter to speak out about the incident with Cantu, who was promptly taken into custody without incident, before being transported to Guadalupe County Jail.

The Schertz-Cibolo-Universal-City Independent School District (SCUCISD) said it first learned of the allegations during spring break. In response, the district placed Cantu on administrative leave and immediately suspended his access to all technology.

"The news is deeply concerning, and this conduct is absolutely unacceptable," a spokesperson with SCUCISD stated, in a statement obtained by KSAT. The district also announced, "Mr. Cantu will not be returning to SCUC ISD in any capacity." In addition, the spokesperson confirmed that SCUC ISD will conduct its own investigation and report to all appropriate agencies, while reaching out individually to parents of current and former students taught by Cantu.

Cantu turned himself in to authorities this morning. While bond information has not yet been released, Cantu is being booked at the Guadalupe County Jail. Schertz PD is encouraging anyone with more information to come forward and call them at 210-619-1200, detailing that the investigation is still ongoing.
