Charged and disarmed: A routine traffic stop in Springfield took a dramatic turn when officers seized a firearm and arrested a local man late yesterday night. Springfield Police pulled over a vehicle at the intersection of Boston Road and Heath Street after noticing its registration had been revoked - the car was uninsured. The stop led to a startling discovery; officers found a loaded large-capacity firearm and more than the legal amount of marijuana.
An officer initially spotted the car with the lapsed registration around 9:45 p.m. Backup officers joined the scene, conducting a thorough search that culminated in the firearm and drug find. Garrett Tyndal, a 28-year-old Springfield native, was identified as the driver. He faced multiple charges, including carrying and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, alongside drug and motor vehicle infractions, as reported by Springfield Police Department's Official website.
The passengers in Tyndal's vehicle were cleared and released at the scene. But Tyndal is now confronting the repercussions of his alleged actions: carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of a high-capacity magazine/feeding device, possession of ammunition without an FID card, possession of a Class D drug, and the motor vehicle charges attached to an uninsured and unregistered vehicle.
Springfield Police highlighted the significance of the arrest, underlining the risks posed by such weapons on the streets. The loaded firearm contained 14 rounds of ammunition, which law enforcement was able to secure thanks to what began as an observation of a simple traffic violation. Tyndal’s booking into custody represents a small yet meaningful victory for public safety in Springfield, helping keep potentially dangerous individuals and weapons off the roads.
