A domestic dispute call turned fatal early Sunday when a Surprise police officer shot and killed a man wielding a shotgun. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. near Waddell and Dysart Roads when Surprise police were summoned to a home. According to a report by 12News, the altercation escalated as a woman fled the house and her husband, 44-year-old Trinidad Ledesma, confronted officers with a shotgun.

It remains unclear whether Ledesma aimed or waved the gun at the police before he was fatally shot. As the investigation continues to unfold, a statement obtained by AZFamily informed that no officers were injured during the incident and emphasized that there is no present threat to the community. The Buckeye Police Department has been tasked to further investigate the shooting, in line with the West Valley Investigative Response Team protocols.

The shooting has stunned those residing in the otherwise quiet Surprise neighborhood, with residents expressing their shock and dismay. "This is not normal for our neighborhood. I've been living here for a few years. Nothing like this happens," said neighbor Nick Kunze in an interview with AZFamily. Another local, Stan Saruwatari, recounted his disbelief: "I was shocked out of my mind that something will ever happen in this quiet neighborhood. It’s always been a good, safe neighborhood."

Having become the 14th police shooting in Maricopa County and the 20th state-wide this year, the incident has sparked a conversation regarding community safety. "It does make it scary that things like this are happening here, especially for neighbors who have never encountered this before," Kunze told AZFamily. He added an appeal to the neighborhood ethos, "As neighbors, let's just love each other and try to help each other out."

The Surprise Police Department briefly noted the occurrence on social media, advising residents of the investigation and media staging area details. Ledesma was pronounced dead on the scene, despite efforts by police to render medical aid.
